Cougars Split With Rams on Grand-Opening Day
PROVO -- The BYU (26-21, 5-4) softball team split with Colorado State (7-32, 4-9) Saturday on the grand-opening day of Miller Park, losing the first game 7-3 but bouncing back after a lengthy rain delay to win the second game 10-4.
In game one, Colorado State's Holly Schmillen doubled to start the game and put the Rams up 1-0 when she came into score after tagging up on a foul ball. In the fourth, Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston doubled in two runs and Brooke Cadiente hit a home run to left field, the first-ever by a Cougar at Gail Miller Field, to put BYU up 3-1. Colorado State came back in the fifth, scoring one run on a double by Schmillen, another on a single by Brooke Boyer and a third when Schmillen scored on an error by Pierce-Boydston. The Rams scored three more in the sixth when Schmillen singled in two runs and Boyer another to put Colorado State ahead for good, 7-4. Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (12-14) got the loss giving up seven runs on eight hits while striking out seven.
BYU got on the board early in game two when Becca Erickson singled in Emily Fernley to put the Cougars up 1-0 after the second inning. The rains came and the game was delayed for 2 hours 25 minutes before the players resumed competition. When play began, Cadiente singled in two runs and Erickson walked in another. Colorado State closed the margin, scoring three runs in the fourth but BYU put the game out of reach by scoring five times in the fifth inning. Cadiente hit a solo home run, Erickson singled in a run and Oli Keohohou hit a three-run home run, her 17th of the season, to put BYU up 9-0. The Cougars added another run on a RBI-double from Erickson in the sixth. Meghann Pricer (10-4) gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
"I'm proud of our effort," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "It is hard to stay focused during a delay but I'm pleased with how we came out swinging the bat."
BYU will next play two games against San Diego State Friday at 1:30 p.m. and two more against UNLV Saturday at noon.
