BYU Defeats OSU to Start Season 3-1

ST. GEORGE -- The BYU women's softball team finished their weekend at the Thunderbird Classic with two wins and a loss on Saturday, capped by a 4-1 victory over 18th ranked Oregon State. The Cougars (3-1) lost a close second game on Saturday 2-1 versus the University of San Diego. Finally, the Cougars came out swinging with an 11-4 win over St. Mary's.

The Cougars played well in their 10 a.m. game against Oregon State with an impressive 4-1 victory even though the Beavers scored first in the top of the first inning. All-American Oli Keohohou slammed her first home run of the year, a two-run bomb, after leading the nation in slugging percentage last season. Sophomore Ariel Capra (1-0) picked up her first win of the season after only pitching two games last season.

In their second game, the Cougars started slow as the Torreros took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. BYU eventually scored in the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough as San Diego won 2-1. Freshman Niki Andersen (0-1) pitched well in her first collegiate start striking out six, but the offense didn't produce enough for her to pick up the win. Keohohou went 2-2 with a double and also produced the only run scored.

In the final game, the Cougar bats connected and produced 11 runs as BYU defeated St. Mary's 11-4. Keohohou smashed her second home run of the day and finished with 2 RBI after being walked three times. Freshman Lauren Watson went 2-4 and produced a career-high 4 RBI, also tying a tournament-record. Senior Elizabeth Boydston hit her first home run of the season to finish the weekend. Cynthia Fallowfield (2-0) picked up the win in four innings after striking out six.

Up next for the Cougars will be the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas, February 15-16. The Cougars will face some of their toughest competition of the year as they face Oregon State again, Cal-Berkeley, UCLA and Nebraska.
