Seventh Inning Rallies Help BYU Finish Red Desert Undefeated

ST. GEORGE -- The BYU women's softball team defeated PAC-10 Oregon 8-7, and beat Utah State 7-6 to finish Red Desert Classic a perfect 4-0. The Cougars have now won six straight and are 11-8 on the season.

Against the Ducks, the Cougars fell behind 0-7 and were able to score eight straight runs in an amazing comeback to win in the seventh inning. All-American Oli Keohohou belted her eighth and ninth home runs of the season, the ninth proving to be the game winner as she went 4-4 for the game. Kate Walker, who transferred from Oregon, went 2-4 against her former team. Freshman Niki Andersen picked up the first win of her collegiate career in the start.

In the second game, in-state rival Utah State held a 5-6 lead heading into the seventh inning. This time the hero was junior Brooke Cadiente, hitting a two run go-ahead home run to seal the victory, her eighth of the season. Cadiente finished 2-3 with three RBI. Freshman Lauren Watson smashed her first collegiate grand slam in the victory.

"I was pleased the way our team was able to come back today to win both games," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone.

Up next for the Cougars is the South Florida Tournament Mar. 7-9. BYU will face the likes of Maryland and Michigan State and look to continue their winning streak. The first home game of the season is Mar. 13 against UVSC at Gail Miller Field starting at 2 p.m.
