Cougars Win Three Games to Finish Tournament
TAMPA BAY -- The BYU women's softball team won three games in their final day at the Southern Florida Tournament, Saturday. The Cougars beat Georgia State 4-3 in their final scheduled game of the tournament. The Cougars are now 16-10 on the season heading back for their first home games of the season.
They advanced to a single-game elimination playoff and beat Central Michigan 5-2. The Cougars advanced to play Oklahoma State and won a thriller in eight innings 4-3. The Cougars were eliminated from the finals tomorrow because of the University's policy to not play of Sunday.
In the first game against Georgia State, Cynthia Fallowfield (7-4) won after a tough loss to Florida International on Friday. Freshman Arron Layns had two RBI while All-American Oli Keohohou brought in the game winning run.
In the first playoff game against Central Michigan, freshman Niki Andersen (4-3) won her fourth straight game. Keohohou and Liz Boydston each hit a home run.
In thier final game of the tournament, the Cougars scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 on the Cowgirls. Oklahoma State tied it 1-1 in the sixth inning and the game went to extra innings. OSU hit first and scored two runs to take a 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Debbie Dodds scored to get within one run. After two strikeouts, the Cougars were on their heels as Fallowfield stepped up to the plate and knocked in a two-run double to lead the Cougars in the furious comeback. Fallowfield (8-4) also picked up the win on the mound.
"Today was a great day to bounce back after a shaky start early in the tournament," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "Everything came together today."
BYU will play in their home-opener, Mar. 13 against UVSC at 2 p.m. at Gail Miller Field. They will host Southern Utah on Mar. 16.
