Temples' 10 strikeouts leads Cougars to 2-0 shutout over UVU

PROVO, Utah — After 11 days off due to weather cancellations, BYU softball beat UVU 2-0 at home on Wednesday night, improving its season record to 26-10 overall.

Chloe Temples recorded 10 strikeouts for the Cougars with zero walks on the night. She now has a 9-3 record this season.

The Cougars finished with two runs on six hits, while UVU had none on three. Taylei Williams recorded a run and a hit for the Cougars, while Marissa Chavez had two hits and BYU’s second run. Huntyr Ava had an RBI with two hits and HannahJo Peterson-Mills gave BYU another hit.

After a scoreless first inning, Chavez made her way around the diamond in the second to give BYU a run on the board, using a single from Peterson-Mills to reach home plate.

The Cougars continued to build their lead in the third as UVU remained scoreless. Martha Epenesa singled to center to start off the bottom of the third. Then Williams singled to left-center. Violet Zavodnik walked to load the bases, and a single from Ava brought Williams home.

Both teams were scoreless through the next three innings, keeping the score at 2-0 heading into the final inning. After UVU failed to make a run in the top of the seventh, the Cougars finished the game at 2-0, with a wave to the opposing dugout by Temples.

Next up, BYU will hit the road to face San Diego for a three-game West Coast Conference series in California. The first game will begin at USD Softball Complex on Friday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m. PDT.
