O’Connor named Madness Conference Player of the Week
PROVO, Utah – Sophomore Mercedes O’Connor was named Player of the Week from the West Coast Conference, College Sports Madness announced Tuesday.
The Huntington Beach, California, native hit 5-for-11 including a double, five RBI and three runs scored in BYU softball’s 4-1 showing at last weekend’s Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
O’Connor sparked the Cougars to a 5-4 win over Hawaii with a walk-off single in their first game of the tournament. She added an RBI in a 1-for-3 game against Northwestern, helping BYU to a 5-1 win. Against UNLV she hit 2-for-2 with two RBI, one double and two hit-by-pitches and followed that up with a 1-for-2 RBI performance against UTEP. The sophomore outfielder is hitting .333 on the season with a .576 OBP.
The Cougars will be back in action Thursday against UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. PST at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California.
