Stewart Leads Cougars in Las Vegas Scrimmages

LAS -- Senior team captain Andrew Stewart recorded consecutive double-digit kill outings as the BYU men’s volleyball team defeated Long Beach State and Grand Canyon on Friday. The Cougars are competing in a series of scrimmages in Las Vegas this weekend.

Playing to the best two out of three sets, Stewart knocked down 14 kills against the 49ers in the first scrimmage of the day. After dropping the first set, 30-25, the Cougars pounded out back-to-back 30-24 games to claim the overall win. Mat Taylor and Rusty Lavaja contributed eight kills apiece, while Futi Tavana recorded two service aces.

The second matchup of the day pitted BYU against the Lopes of Grand Canyon. Stewart’s 10 kills were paired with 12 from Taylor as the Cougars ran away with a 30-17, 30-20, 15-10 win. Alex Da Pron led the team with 14 digs, with Stewart completing a double-double with 12 digs.

The Cougars continue play on Saturday with a scrimmage against Long Beach City College at 1 p.m. PT at Las Vegas High School.
