PROVO -- The No. 9 BYU men’s volleyball team recorded its second sweep of the season with its 3-0 win (30-23, 30-28, 30-28) over No. 11 Hawai’i on Friday. With the win the Cougars improve to 4-3 on the season and remain undefeated at 2-0 in MPSF play.

“It’s very important for our team to win ugly matches,” said BYU head coach Shawn Patchell. “We played good defensively tonight against a very good Hawai’i team. We have room for improvement but we served well. Our team’s serving in the Smith Fieldhouse is probably the best any BYU team has served since I’ve been here.”

Junior opposite Mat Taylor led the Cougars in kills for the third consecutive match, with his 19 against the Warriors. Andrew Stewart followed second on the team with 11 kills of his own.

“We ask Mat to bring that special energy he has,” said Patchell. “He is a smart player who takes what is given to him. That makes him very hard to defend.”

Mat Taylor’s nine kills in the first set helped BYU pull ahead to an early 30-23 win. Down 7-6, the Cougars scored four consecutive points off of kills by Taylor, Yamil Perez, Andrew Stewart and a block by Otavio Souza. BYU continued to build a comfortable lead as Kevin Sagers knocked down back-to-back kills to end the set.

The Cougars clawed back from a four-point deficit late in the second set to claim the 30-28 win in thrilling fashion. Futi Tavana’s two blocks tied the score 28-28, bringing the 2,836 in attendance to their feet. Tavana recorded his third block of the night to set up match point, a service ace by Taylor.

Up 27-20 in the third set, the Cougars looked poised to make quick work of the Warriors, however Hawai’i fought back with two separate 3-0 runs, bringing the score to 29-28. The Warriors 19th service error of the night proved fatal as BYU clinched the match with a 30-28 win.

The Cougars travel to take on UC Santa Barbara on Jan 30-31. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. PT.
