Tides Turn as Pacific Tops BYU
STOCKTON, Calif. (March, 12, 2005) -- After dominating the Tigers in game one 30-17, the Cougars could not keep up with Pacific, losing 3-1 (30-17, 24-30, 26-30, 25-30) Saturday at the Spanos Center. BYU fell to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the Tigers improved to 12-11 and 6-9.
"That first game was about as good as we can play," BYU coach Tom Peterson said. "Then we relaxed and we can't do that. It's disappointing that we still have to learn how to play under pressure and stay consistent."
Ivan Perez turned in another strong performance for the Cougars, registering a career-high 24 kills (.588 percentage) while adding two aces and nine digs. Brian Rowley contributed 13 digs while Taylor Evans and Victor Batista had three service aces apiece.
As a team, BYU hit .294 (58-23-119), had 11 aces and 32 digs. Pacific was much better hitting the ball as the Tigers limited their errors and hit .402 (55-12-107). Pacific had 32 digs and out-blocked the Cougars for the second-straight night 10.0-5.0.
BYU was unstoppable in the first, leading throughout and serving the Tigers out of the gym. Victor Batista contributed three aces to the cause as BYU steamrolled Pacific 30-17.
The momentum the Cougars enjoyed in the first quickly evaporated as the Tigers stepped up their intensity and made more plays than BYU to take the game 30-24.
The Cougars were unable to recover from the loss and dropped the next two games in similar fashion, 30-26, 30-25.
"We're still not good enough to keep a good thing going," Peterson said. "We can't prevent momentum switches and that is a big part of volleyball. Whoever can keep the momentum for longer periods of time usually gets the win."
BYU will look to bounce back with two matches versus Hawai'i in the Smith Fieldhouse March 18 and 19. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
