BYU WINS NCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TITLE

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - The top-ranked BYU Cougars scored eight unanswered points to end the match and defeated second-ranked Long Beach State in three games at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion to win their first-ever NCAA men's volleyball title in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

After handily winning the first two games, the Cougars found themselves down 7-0 in the third but tied it up at seven before Long Beach State once again took the lead 10-7. But behind Mac Wilson's serving, the Cougars rallied again and reeled off three straight points while down 10-8. First, Wilson served an ace, then Rich Lambourne and Ryan Millar blocked David McKienzie to tie it again at 10. A Millar kill gave the Cougars the lead at 10-11, and they never looked back. On match point, Tournament MVP Ossie Antonetti emphatically spiked the ball for a kill to give BYU the University's third overall NCAA Championship.

Antonetti led all players with 22 kills. Millar had 15, Steve Hinds 14 and Lambourne 13. For Long Beach State, McKienzie led the way with 19 kills. Jim Polster had 18, and Matt Prosser had 14.

Blocking was the key stat for the Cougars, who had 23.5 total team blocks to Long Beach State's 11.5. Millar led all players with two solo blocks and 11 block assists. The 49ers hit just .156 in the match, and .000 in the second game.

The Cougars, in joining Penn State as only the second non-California school to win the Championship, avenged its only loss of the 1999 season, March 19 vs. the 49ers.
