2002 Regular-Season Highlights

• BYU All-American Mike Wall recorded his eighth 20-kill performance of the season, leading BYU to an upset victory over No. 2 Hawaii on April 13. Wall, the 2001 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player, has registered double-digit kills in 27 of the Cougars' 28 matches this season, including a season-high 30 kills against Pacific on Jan. 10.

• Two different BYU players average over 4.1 kills per game, including opposite Mike Wall (4.84 k/g) and senior outside hitter Joaquin Acosta (4.15 k/g).

• The Cougars' shutout victory over Hawaii on April 13 marked BYU's 11th 3-0 win of the season.

• BYU has won eight 3-0 matches in the last 12 contests.

• The Cougars have posted an impressive 33-6 (.846) single-game record over the last 12 matches. During that span, the Cougars have posted an 11-1 record.

• The Cougars have not lost more than two straight matches during the regular season since 1996.

• BYU posted a perfect 6-0 record against non-conference opponents, including wins over Ohio State, Ball State and Lewis.

• While finishing fourth in the MPSF regular-season standings, the Cougars were just one game behind UCLA and Hawaii, which both finished tied for second. The Cougars split with both Hawaii and UCLA -- on the road!

• Saturday's win over No. 2 Hawaii marked the Cougars' 12th victory over a top-10 opponent on the season, including their fifth win over a top-five opponent. The Cougars have recorded seven 3-0 wins over opponents ranked in the top-10.

• Wins over top-10 opponents include No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Hawaii, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 UC Santa Barbara, No. 9 UC Irvine, No. 9 CS Northridge, No. 9 Lewis, No. 12 USC, No. 12 Ohio State and No. 15 Pacific.

• The Cougars concluded the 2002 regular season by playing four matches in five days (all on the road), producing a mark of 3-1 with wins at UC San Diego and a 3-0 victory at No. 2 Hawaii.

• Due to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the Cougars played six matches on the road during the entire month of February, posting a 4-2 mark. During that month-long span, BYU picked up wins at Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UCLA.

• After posting a 22-6 regular-season mark in 2002, the Cougars have registered an impressive 93-20 (.823) over the past four seasons. During that span, BYU has won two of the three previous NCAA National Championships, including the 1999 and 2001 titles.
