BYU hits the road to face MPSF foe No. 12 Stanford

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s volleyball is preparing for a two matches against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent No. 12 Stanford in the Maples Pavilion this Friday and Saturday.

The history between the Cougars and the Cardinal dates back to 1990. Currently, BYU leads the all-time series with a 40-22 record and is on a three-match winning streak against Stanford.

Brigham Young University Cougars (8-12, 3-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)

  • BYU was last in action when it faced Pepperdine on the weekend of March 25 in the Firestone Fieldhouse for two matches. The Cougars picked up a 3-2 win on Friday and suffered a 3-0 loss on Saturday. 
  • Nationally, BYU ranks No. 16 in hitting percentage (.289), No. 17 in assists per set (11.31), No. 19 in blocks per set (2.013) and No. 20 in kills per set (11.96).
  • Senior outside hitter Davide Gardini ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in kills per set (3.82), No. 15 in points per set (4.42) and No. 19 in attacks per set (8.04).
  • Out of BYU’s 20 matches this season, head coach Shawn Olmstead has had 12 different starting lineups, as the Cougars rebuild after losing five starters from last season.
  • The Cougars finished the 2021 season with a 20-4 record, its eighth MPSF conference championship title, a trip to the NCAA national championship game and a No. 2 national ranking.

No. 12 Stanford University Cardinal (10-11, 2-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)

  • Last week, the Cardinal extended its losing streak to three after posting two losses against Grand Canyon University in Phoenix (0-3, 1-3).
  • Nationally, Stanford ranks No. 12 in digs per set (9.12), No. 13 in kills per set (12.32), No. 13 in assists per set (11.55), No. 15 in hitting percentage (.290), No.16 in team attacks per set (27.33) and No. 22 in aces per set (1.42).
  • Junior outside hitter Will Rottman ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in attacks per set (9.41), No. 7 in kills per set (4.14) and No. 8 in points per set (4.69).
  • Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Ethan Hill ranks No. 4 in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.480).
