Cougars secure No. 2 overall seed for NCAA Tournament
PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s volleyball secured the No. 2 overall seed in the 2018 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship, receiving a bye into the semifinals.
Long Beach State (26-1, 9-1 BW) earned the No. 1 overall seed and the other bye into the semifinals.
The two-time defending national champion Buckeyes (23-5, 11-3 MIVA) earned the automatic bid from the MIVA while King (23-5, 15-1 CC) picked up the automatic bid from the Conference Carolinas. The two teams will be the first to compete in the tournament, playing at Ohio State Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. EDT.
The winner of that match will face UC Irvine (21-9, 6-4 BW), who picked up the second at-large bid, Tuesday, May 1, at 5 p.m. PDT. The winner of that match will face the 49ers Thursday, May 3, at 5 p.m. PDT.
UCLA (24-7, 9-3 MPSF) earned an at-large bid while Harvard (13-13, 10-4 EIVA) earned the EIVA's automatic bid. Those teams will play each other Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. PDT.
BYU (22-6, 10-2 MPSF), the MPSF regular-season and tournament champion, will play the winner of UCLA vs. Harvard Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. PDT.
BYU holds a 3-3 record in 2018 against the tournament field. The Cougars beat Ohio State in Columbus in five sets and UCLA twice. BYU also lost to the Bruins in Los Angeles once and twice on the road at UC Irvine.
The semifinal matches will be streamed live on NCAA.com with ESPN2 broadcasting the championship match Saturday, May 5, at 4 p.m. PDT.
All matches, except for the Ohio State vs. King matchup, will take place in Los Angeles at Pauley Pavilion, home to UCLA.
