BYU men's tennis remains alive in Southern California Championships
LOS ANGELES – Three BYU doubles duos remain in competition, along with Patrick Kawka, who advanced to the singles semifinals in the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Friday in Los Angeles.
Sophomore Kawka upset No. 4 seed Warren Hardie, 7-6(3), 6-3, to secure a semifinal match in the main singles draw against Alex Brighman of powerhouse UCLA.
No. 5 seed senior Georgy Batrakov fell to No. 1 seed Yannick Hanfmann of USC, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Keaton Cullimore was unable to top his quarterfinal opponent, No. 3 seed Clay Thompson of UCLA, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Freshman Francis Sargeant will face Azusa Pacific’s Whitman Hough in the quarterfinals of the singles qualifying consolation draw Saturday.
Three doubles team remain alive as the main draw gets underway Saturday.
Freshman David Doehring and sophomore Travis Fillmore earned a berth in the main draw after advancing through the qualifying rounds Thursday. The BYU duo will face Concordia’s Gernot Hageman and Bruno Santarelli Saturday in the Round of 16.
Both out of the main singles draw, Cullimore and Sargeant are able to focus their attention on the doubles main draw, where the pair found themselves after a successful qualifying rounds performance. The teammates look to upset No. 2 seed Alex Brigham and Clay Thompson of UCLA Saturday.
With an automatic main draw placing, the No. 4 seed Batrakov and Kawka begin doubles competition Saturday against UC Riverside’s Austin Andres and Felix Marcherez in the Round of 16.
