PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s tennis head coach Dave Porter has hired assistant coach Rong Ma to join his staff for the 2021-2022 season.

"I've known Rong for over 20 years," Porter said. "I met him originally when he was a member of the Guangdong provincial team in mainland China. He's a hard worker and a terrific player. I think he will be a great recruiter for us in Asia and parts of the world where we hope that both tennis and the church are expanding."

Prior to joining BYU, Ma served as an assistant coach for the University of Hawaii women’s tennis team and the BYU-Hawaii men’s and women’s tennis teams.

As a player at BYU-Hawaii, Ma earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) DII All-America honors. He was also recognized as the ITA’s winner of the DII West Region’s Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.

Ma won the ITA’s DII Senior Player of the Year award for the West Region in his final season.

In his first year as an assistant coach for the Seasiders, Ma was voted the ITA’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the DII West Region in 2012.

After graduating from BYU-Hawaii with a degree in exercise sports science, Ma earned his Master's of Science in Kinesiology and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.

Ma is a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association and formerly ranked both in singles and doubles in the Association of Tennis Professional.
