Eighth-ranked men's golf team is leading at John H. Burns Intercollegiate

Thanks to subpar rounds of 68 by senior Andy Miller and junior Billy Harvey, the eighth-ranked BYU men's golf team is tied for the lead after the first day of the John H. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"The wind was blowing, but it was a really good day for scoring conditions," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "We finished a little sloppy, but we are right in the hunt."

BYU, who has won its last two tournaments of the fall season, starts the spring season right where it left off-at the top. The Cougars are at 12-under par tied with the 24th-ranked University of Arizona and six strokes ahead of fifth-ranked Oklahoma State. Other ranked teams included in the 17-team field are no. 9 UNLV, No.20 Oklahoma, and No. 23 New Mexico. The rest of the field includes Auburn, California, Colorado State, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, Pacific, San Jose State, Southern Methodist, Texas-El Paso, Utah and Weber State.

The John H. Burns Intercollegiate continues today and finishes on Friday. The tournament is being played at the Leilehua Golf Course and is a part of the Rolex Collegiate Tour, administered by the College Golf Foundation. The tournament will be played in a 54-hole stroke play format with the top four individual scores counting towards the team score. Leilehua Golf Course plays to a par-72 and is a 6,916-yard layout.

"It's a real fun course to play," Brockbank said. "We'll see if we can't come out today and continue shooting under par."
