BYU Struggles in Final Round of Red River Classic

DALLAS -- After a great second round, BYU struggled in the final round of the Taylor Made Red River Classic, finishing 13th in a field of 15 teams. The Cougars shot a final-round 295 for a 54-hole total of 869.

No. 6 Texas ran away with the tournament, finishing 30 under par over 54-holes. Texas sophomore Jason Hartwick recorded his first collegiate victory, finishing 15 under par.

"Right now we aren't really consistent," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "We've got to find a way to be more stable."

BYU senior Kyle Wight was the only consistent player for the Cougars, finishing with rounds of 71-73-72. Manuel Merizalde was tied with Wight for 35th after being tied for sixth going into the final round. Merizalde finished the tournament with a final-round 78, his highest score of the season.

The tournament looked bright after BYU recorded a second- round combined score of 283. "The second round was more of what I expect to see our team play in the future," Brockbank said. "Whether it looks like it or not, I really think this team is getting better week by week."

After four tournaments in the last five weeks, the BYU men's golf team will have almost as many weeks off until they close the fall season at the Aztec Invitational, Nov. 5-6 in SanDiego, Calif. "I'm looking forward to the guys getting back to their schoolwork," Brockbank said. "It will be good for them to be able to practice their game and get ready for San Diego."
