Shelley's 66 helps Cougars to third-place finish at Wolf Pack Classic
RENO, Nev. — BYU men’s golf shot 9-under in the final round of the Wolf Pack Classic to finish third behind a career-low, 6-under 66 from sophomore Tyson Shelley.
“Tyson Shelley played a great round of golf today to help our team to a third-place finish,” said BYU men’s golf coach Bruce Brockbank. “Shooting 66 is always a great score, but to do it in the final round when our team needed a boost was a great help today.”
New Mexico (279-279-275—833) took home the team championship after posting a 31-under-par team total to win the Wolf Pack Classic for the second-straight year.
San Diego State (278-277-282—837) finished second at 27-under, five shots clear of BYU (282-281-279—842) who shot a season-best 22-under par. San Diego shot 21-under-par to finish fourth, one shot clear of San Francisco who finished fifth.
The Cougars had four players finish in the top-20 for the first time this season to grab a third place finish. Carson Lundell and David Timmins lead the way for BYU as they finished in a tie for 11th.
Lundell fired rounds of 69-69-72—210 while Timmins posted scores of 68-71-71—210. The seniors have grabbed top-25 finishes in all three events this season to help the Cougars to a runner-up finish at the Olympic Club Intercollegiate, a fifth-place finish at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate and a third-place finish this week in Reno.
Tyson Shelley earned his second top-15 finish of the young season as the freshman shot 7-under-par over his last 36 holes. The Skyline High School product carded scores of 74-71-66—211 while making seven birdies and a lone bogey in the final round.
“If you’re going to make a move, you need somebody to get under par quickly and Tyson did that for us today,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “The rest of the guys hung in there today and posted some solid numbers but Tyson’s 66 was fun to watch.”
In his first event of the 2022-23 campaign, Max Brenchley finished tied for 19th after rounds of 72-70-70—212. Brenchley carded two birdies and two eagles in his third round to post a 4-under total to help the Cougars to a 9-under final round.
Zac Jones shot 73-71-74—218 to finish tied for 42nd at 2-over-par while Elijah Turner, playing as an individual, finished tied for 34th after shooting 71-73-71—215.
“We have shown signs of great golf throughout the first three events,” said Brockbank. “Having four guys in the top-20 is nice, but we still need to clean up a few things, step up our game and play better golf to accomplish our goals this season.
The Cougars will next tee it up Oct. 17-19 at Colorado Golf Club for the TPC Colorado Paintbrush Invitational.
