STOCKTON, Calif. — BYU moved up one spot on the leaderboard into a tie for third at the NCAA Stockton Regional after a 12-under-par second round at The Reserve at Spanos Park on Tuesday.

“I’m really proud of the guys for moving up a spot,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “The team did exactly what they needed to today to put us in a position to make a run in the final round and have a chance to advance to the NCAAs. Tomorrow is going to be a shootout.”

After a lackluster front nine, BYU rebounded by shooting 11-under-par on the back nine to move into a tie with Oregon for third place, putting the Cougars in a NCAA qualifying position with 18-holes to play.

For the second straight day, Carson Lundell and David Timmins fired matching scores and sit at 7-under par in a six-way tie for the lead through 36-holes. Lundell and Timmins posted 4-under 68s on day two with Timmins making five birdies and a bogey while Lundell the No. 55 player in the country carded seven birdies and three bogeys in round two.

No. 4 Arizona State (279-276—555) leads the way at 21-under-par for the week and holds a two-shot lead over No. 16 Stanford (278-279—557).

Oregon, ranked No. 28, is tied for third with BYU (284-276—560) at 16-under-par after a scorching 18-under 270 on day two. LSU Tigers shot 13-under-par to move into the fifth and final qualifying spot as they enter the final round tomorrow.

Max Brenchley (72-70—142) fired a 2-under second round to move into a tie for 26th after 36-holes. After two bogeys, a double and an eagle for a 2-over opening nine, Brenchley rattled off four birdies on the back nine to get to 2-under for the day.

“Max had a lot of ups and downs on his front nine,” said Miller. “But he really locked in on the back nine and made a bunch of birdies that really helped the team.”

Tyson Shelley matched Brenchley’s 2-under 70 in round two to jump 14-spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 53rd, while Cole Ponich rounded out the Cougar scores with a 74.

“Shelley made a great run with four birdies in five holes to get the team kickstarted this morning," said Miller.

The Cougars tee off in the final round at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning and will be paired with LSU and Denver. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
