SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — BYU men’s golf is in 11th place after shooting 386 in the opening round of the 75th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.

The Cougars faced rain early on in their round and 15-30 mph wind most of the day, making it very difficult to score in the opening round.

"Pasatiempo is one of the shortest courses we play in collegiate golf but the greens make it incredibly challenging even on a perfect day,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “The combination of gusty winds and really firm, fast greens made today one of the toughest I’ve coached in 15 years.”

No. 8 Pepperdine shot an 18-over 368 in the first round for a three-shot lead over No. 9 Texas who finished at 21-over (371). No. 6 Washington is in third at 23-over-par (373) followed by the Cal Golden Bears at 24-over (374) with host San Jose State rounding out the top-5 at 26-over-par (376).

The Cougars were led by a pair of 75s from David Timmins and Max Brenchley. Brenchley made three birdies on the day while Timmins made two on their way to a tie for 23rd through 18-holes.

Carson Lundell, wh finished runner-up in 2021, posted a 7-over opening round and is seven shots off the lead going into round two. The senior finished with eight bogeys and a birdie to put himself in a tie for 40th entering day two.

Cole Ponich posted an 8-over 78 in his first round and sits in a tie for 52nd. Keanu Akina shot 81 and Zac Jones carded an 84. Tyson Shelley played as an individual in tbe rain of the morning and posted a 7-over-par 77 and is in a tie for 40th with Lundell.

“For the most part the guys stayed composed and didn’t make excuses, despite the tough conditions," said Miller. "Tomorrow, we need to work to keep the ball underneath the hole which will help eliminate big numbers."

The Cougars will tee off Tuesday at 9:06 a.m. PDT, with the three-hour Golf Channel broadcast beginning 5 p.m. PDT.
