Cougars at Pasatiempo for the Western Intercollegiate

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf will tee it up at the 75th Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, California, April 11-13. The 54-hole event will be played at Pasatiempo Golf Club and broadcast live on the Golf Channel.

Cougar senior Carson Lundell finished runner-up at the 2021 Western and returns to have another run at the individual title. Lundell is coming off an eighth-place finish at The Goodwin two weeks ago, his fourth top-10 of the season.

Lundell will be joined by Keanu Akina, David Timmins, Zac Jones, Cole Ponich and Max Brenchley, who will attempt to bring home the eighth team title for BYU at the Western. Freshman Tyson Shelley will tee it up as an individual competitor in his first trip to the Western. 

Brenchly and Ponich tee off at 11:30 a.m. PDT with Timmins and Jones following at 11:42. Lundell and Akina will anchor the BYU lineup going off at 11:54 a.m. PDT. Shelley will be in the second group off at 9:18 a.m.

Joining BYU in the 14-team field is San Jose State, Arizona, Cal, Colorado State, Hawai’I, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas, UC Irvine, USC, and Washington.

BYU has a strong history at the Western Intercollegiate having won the team title seven times in 1968, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1981. In addition, six former Cougars have captured the individual title. World Golf Hall of Famer Johnny Miller took home individual honors in 1968, Mike Brannan in 1976, Bobby Clampett in 1980, Rick Fehr in 1982, Rafael Ponce in 1989 and current head coach Bruce Brockbank in 1988.

Brockbank is one of just two players to win the individual title (73-71-71—215) and then return to the Western Intercollegiate as a head coach. The other being the late Ross Randall, the 1964 Western Intercollegiate medalist, who later coached at the University of Kansas.

Opened in 1929, Pasatiempo Golf Club was designed by world-renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National and Cypress Point. The par 70, 6,495-yard, semi-private course is typically included in the annual Golf Digest America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses. In addition to the Western Intercollegiate, Pasatiempo has also hosted several USGA Championships, including the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2004 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.

All three rounds will be broadcast live on Golf Channel featuring three hours of coverage each day. Coverage of rounds one and two will begin Monday and Tuesday at 5 p.m. MDT with final round coverage Wednesday at 2 p.m. MDT.
