Cougars finish fourth at Arizona Intercollegiate

BYU men’s golf shot 2-under par in the final round to finish fourth at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Tucson Country Club.

Arizona posted an 11-under-par final round to finish 35-under (274-278-277—829) and win the tournament. New Mexico finished one shot back (277-280-273—830) despite a 15-under par final round. Arkansas who entered the week ranked No. 5 in the country shot 16-under par in the final round and finished third at 29-under par (285-278-272—835).

BYU finished at 12-under par for the tournament (286-280-286—852), two shots clear of WCC foe LMU (283-280-291-854) who finished fifth and four shots ahead of sixth place Santa Clara (285-290-280—855).

“I was really impressed with the way we came out today and finished the tournament strong,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank. "We gave away few shots in the middle of the final round, but the guys dug deep and played well down the stretch. I’m pleased with the solid start coming out of winter.”

Carson Lundell’s consistent play led to his second top-10 finish of the season. The senior posted three consecutive under-par rounds shooting 69-70-70—209 to finish at 7-under in a tie for 10th. Lundell recorded 14 birdies en route to his best finish of the season.

Cole Ponich secured his second top-15 finish of the year after posting a career best 6-under 66 in round two. He finished in a tie for 14th after shooting 7-under for the tournament at 73-66-72—211. Over three rounds, Ponich carded two eagles and 12 birdies.

Tyson Shelley fired rounds of 70-70-74—214 to earn a 26th place finish. Max Brenchley posted a 2-under-par final round that including five birdies, for a three day total of 77-74-70—221. Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars was Elijah Turner with rounds of 74-74-78—226.

Each of the guys battled through some adversity,” said assistant coach Daniel Summerhays. “We learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on moving forward, but I’m proud of the relentless attitude the guys showed today.”

The Cougars have a few weeks off before their next tournament at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii, February 17-19.
