Cougars in third at Stockton Invitational
STOCKTON, Calif. — BYU men’s golf posted a 7-under-par 277 in the second round of the Visit Stockton Invitational on Friday for a two-day total of 547 (-21), good for third place with 18-holes left to play Saturday.
Washington State leads the tournament at 26-under par, while San Jose State sits in second at 22-under through 36 holes. Saint Mary’s and Utah round out the the top-5 at 19-under and 18-under respectively.
The Cougars were led by Cole Ponich who fired a 6-under 66 on Friday to put him at 8-under for the tournament. Ponich carded seven birdies and just two bogeys in the second round which included a 4-under 32 on his inward nine to put him in a tie for third individually.
Carson Lundell posted a second round 68 which included a hole-out eagle on the par-4 seventh hole. Along with his eagle, Lundell had two birdies and a lone bogey and sits in a tie for ninth at 6-under par.
Keanu Akina shot 72 in his second round and sits in a tie for 20th at 3-under par for the tournament. David Timmins carded a second round 71 to move him into a tie for 35th at 1-under through 36 holes.
Max Brenchley shot 76 in round two and finds himself in a tie for 41st entering the final day. Brock Goyen, who is playing as an individual, rounded out the scoring for the Cougars shooting a 1-over par 72 in round two.
The Cougars will tee off at 9:15 a.m. Saturday for the final 18 holes and will be paired with the Washington State and San Jose.
