PROVO, Utah – BYU men’s head golf coach Bruce Brockbank announced that Salt Lake City native Tyson Shelley has signed a scholarship agreement to play for the Cougars.

“Today is a great day for BYU golf,” Brockbank said. “We have been looking forward to Tyson signing with BYU for months. We are thrilled to have him join the Cougar golf family. Tyson is a great young man who is fun to be around and loves to compete.  He has a tremendous junior golf record that will help him contribute to our team and its success the day he arrives on campus.”

Shelley, the 2019 Utah Junior Golfer of the Year, attends Skyline High School where he led the golf team to three consecutive state titles in 2018, 2019 and 2020. As a senior in 2020, he won the 5A Boys individual state title with a score of 63-65–128 (-16), the lowest individual 36-hole score in Utah prep history.

During his career at Skyline, Shelley was a two-time individual region champion in 2019 and 2020 and a three-time first-team All-State selection in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He concluded his storied high school career by leading the Eagles to a national championship over Florida at the 2020 Boys High School Golf National Invitational in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Shelley has also been successful in regional and national events. In 2019, he led Team Utah to a co-championship at the 47th annual Junior America’s Cup in Alberta, Canada, and in 2020, he won the American Junior Golf Association’s GreatLIFE Junior Challenge in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In addition to his success on the golf course, Shelley played on the varsity basketball team at Skyline, has a 3.9 GPA and was the Skyline athlete representative at the 2019 Camp-U Leadership Conference. He will join the Cougar golf team for the 2021-22 season.
