No. 47 BYU claims five-stroke lead over No. 22 Pepperdine heading into final day of WCC Champs

PROVO, Utah — Freshman Peter Kuest fired a 67 to help No. 47 BYU men's golf hold on to first place in the second round of the 2017 West Coast Conference Golf Championships at Riverside Country Club golf course on Friday.
"The guys stepped up," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We got off to a really good start, and then we hit some loose shots and got ourselves in trouble, but then we made some really good pars and made a few birdies on the back nine to keep the lead."
The Cougars shot -8 as a team in Friday's round to post a -17 team score through 36 holes. The Waves, who finished tied for third at -2 on Thursday, shot -10 as a team on Friday to move into second place. BYU leads Pepperdine by five strokes going into the third and final round of WCC Championship play.
Kuest led BYU men's golf, firing a 67 on Firday to shoot 7-under through 36 holes. Kuest is tied for first place with Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh. The freshman birdied six holes on Friday.
Patrick Fishburn started the second round strong, shooting 3-under on the front nine. He then shot +2 on the back nine. The junior fired a 71 to move to -5 through the first two rounds of the WCC Championships. Fishburn sits alone in third place.
Rhett Rasmussen is tied for ninth place. Rasmussen fired a 70 on Friday to card 72-70 in the first two rounds of WCC Championship play. After firing a 69 on Thursday, Spencer Dunaway shot +2 in round two. Dunaway is tied for 11th place at -1.
CJ Lee recorded an even-par second round score. Lee is tied for 22nd place.
BYU men's golf will continue WCC Championship play on Saturday, with tee times starting at 9:20 a.m. MDT.
The 2017 WCC Golf Championships are free and open to the public. Fans can download a map of Riverside Country Club, if they choose to attend. Links to live stats are also provided on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
