Cougars tied for ninth after 36 holes at National Invitational Tournament
TUCSON, Ariz. — BYU men's golf is currently tied for ninth place after two rounds of play at the National Invitational Tournament on Monday, as Patrick Fishburn and Rhett Rasmussen tied for 17th place, respectively.
"We played mediocre golf today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We hit way too many loose shots and we lacked mental discipline on key holes. We also hit the ball on the short side of the hole, and that made it difficult to get the ball in the hole. We need a good round tomorrow to climb out of the hole we are in."
Playing at the Omni Tucson National-Catalina Course, BYU began the event shooting 3-over-par as a team through the first 18 holes of play. During round one, Rasmussen shot 1-under to lead the Cougars, while Fishburn and CJ Lee both shot 1-over-par. Peter Kuest rounded out the team score in round one shooting 2-over-par.
The Cougars shot even par as a team in round two to sit at 3-over-par after 36 holes. Fishburn led the Cougars in the second round shooting 3-under-par. The junior birdied four holes on the front nine in round two, including three-straight on holes 2, 3 and 4.
After 36 holes, Rasmussen and Fishburn sit at 2-under. Kuest is tied for 41st at 3-over, while Lee is tied for 54th at 5-over-par. Spencer Dunaway finished the day at 10-over and is currently tied for 76th place.
Iowa State leads the field of teams at 27-under-par, with Arizona State one-stroke behind. West Coast Conference foes Santa Clara and San Francisco are tied for seventh place. In-state rival Utah is tied for 11th place at 8-over-par.
Teams will resume play Tuesday with an 8 a.m. MST shotgun start. Links to live stats can be found on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
