Fishburn wins Utah State Am
HIGHLAND, Utah — In the final round of match play, BYU golfer Patrick Fishburn beat Aaron Smith to win the 118th Utah State Amateur at Alpine Country Club on Saturday.
"It feels awesome," Fishburn said. "It is something I have thought about for a long time, ever since I was a kid. To actually have it happen feels amazing, especially to be on the trophy with all those guys who have won it before me. That's pretty good company to be in."
Fishburn won 4 and 2 over Smith after six rounds of tournament play.
With the win, Fishburn now joins a group of former BYU golfers to win the Utah State Amateur. Jordan Rodgers won the 2015 Utah State Amateur at Soldier Hollow, Cole Ogden won in 2013 and Joe Parkinson in 2010.
Third seeded Fishburn began the event matched up against Colton Tanner in the Round of 64, winning 3 and 2 on Wednesday.
The All-WCC First Team member moved on to the Round of 32 facing Kurt Owen. Fishburn won the match 3 and 2.
Fishburn then beat Tommy Forsman and sixth seeded Carl Jensen to advance to the semifinals. The BYU sophomore then challenged Ryan Barber for a spot in the final match. Fishburn advanced to the finals as he won 3 and 2 over Barber.
