Men place 6th after first day of AZ Intercollegiate
TUSCON, Ariz. — Tied for 14th place, sophomore Patrick Fishburn led the BYU men’s golf team to a sixth place finish after the first day of the Arizona Collegiate. Due to diminishing light, all 17 teams will finish the last four holes of Round 2 tomorrow morning before playing the final 18 holes of the tournament.
“We put up some big numbers today as a team and that's unfortunate,“ BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We hung in there in the afternoon, but we will need a solid round tomorrow. If we can eliminate our putting mistakes, we will have the chance to shoot a decent score to end the tournament.”
Fishburn finished the day at two-over-par with a total stroke score of 136. He birdied three holes on the day, eagled the eighth hole in Round 2, and is tied for 14th place. Teammate Zach Pritchard is tied for 28th after 36 holes of golf. Pritchard shot six-over-par after two rounds and shooting one-over-par in Round 1.
C.J. Lee is tied for 43rd shooting eight-over-par on the day. Freshmen Austen Christiansen and Spencer Dunaway shot ten-over-par and 14-over-par, respectively. Christiansen sits in 55th place while Dunaway is tied for 65th.
BYU shot 22-over-par over the first day of tournament play. No. 23 Washington leads the pack of teams at nine-under-par, and No. 10 Texas is currently in second place at seven-under-par. The Cougars sit two strokes behind UTEP and are in front of in-state rival the University of Utah by one stroke.
BYU will play the third and final round of the Arizona Collegiate tomorrow. Teams will tee off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Links to live stats can be found on the BYU men’s golf schedule page.
