Fishburn 24th, team finishes in 14th place
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Sophomore Patrick Fishburn led the Cougars in their first fall tournament finishing the tournament in 24th place at the Saint Mary's Invitational, while the team finished in 14th place, Wednesday.
"I saw improvement, but we still have a long way to go," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We played pretty well on the front nine, but we struggled to keep it together on the back nine. We couldn't finish. The tournament proved to be a good test for us. The course is tough, probably one of the hardest we will play all year."
The BYU men's golf team ended the tournament at +51 and shot a total score of 903 through 54 holes. Former Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State won the tournament shooting one-under-par for the event. West Coast Conference foe and host Saint Mary's stayed close behind and finished in second place at three-over-par.
Fishburn led the Cougars with a third round score of two-under-par for a 24th place finish. He had five birdies on the day.
"Patrick played well," Brockbank said. "He shot a 69 for us today, but we need to make sure that we can get four solid, consistent scores."
CJ Lee was two-over-par in the third round and ended the event tied for 43th place. Sophomore teammate Zach Pritchard shot seven-over-par for the day but shot two-under-par the last four holes. Freshman Kaimakani Ruiz shot his best round of his young college career shooting six-over-par for the day. He finished the tournament at +21. Spencer Dunaway, who shot five-over-par today, also shot his best round.
BYU will continue their fall season competing in the Husky Invitational Sept. 21-22 at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Washington.
