PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The BYU men's golf team had a difficult day on the course at Poppy Hills Golf Course at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Monday.

The Cougars are currently sitting in 15th place as they struggled to compete on an overcast and windy day, with gusts up to 15-20 mph. BYU shot 26-over-par as a team through the first 18 holes.

"We struggled today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We didn't play well. I am hoping that we can come out and compete better tomorrow."

Sophomore Patrick Fishburn proved to be the player that delivered on the first day.  He shot three-over-par for the day and is tied for 30th place.

"Patrick played pretty well for us," Brockbank said. "We'll need him and others to step up tomorrow."

Sophomore Zach Pritchard and freshman Kaimakani Ruiz both shot seven-over-par through 18 holes, while sophomore CJ Lee shot nine-over-par.  Hawaii native Spencer Dunaway shot ten-over-par for the day. Pritchard and Ruiz are tied for 67th place.

Saint Mary's leads the tournament at five-under-par as a team after the first day. Other West Coast Conference opponent Santa Clara is tied for third overall, shooting 290 as a team.

The second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational will be played on Tuesday. Daily results can be found at
