No. 72 Santa Clara edges out BYU, 4-3

Image

PROVO, Utah – Continuing conference play, No. 72 Santa Clara narrowly edged out the BYU women’s tennis team, 4-3, Tuesday at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

“The girls came out strong and fought hard in singles,” BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “I think it’s a matter of keeping momentum going and not changing our game. There are a few specific things we need to work on this week in practice. We’re not executing as well as we should, especially on the short ball. We’ll work on that this week and hopefully it will translate into our match on Friday.”

Match highlights and Interviews

The Broncos (8-5, 2-0 WCC) took the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3. Juniors Aubrey Paul and Andie Young fell 8-4 before Santa Clara topped freshmen Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson, 8-5. Sophomore Desiree Tran and senior Megan Price recorded the lone doubles win for the Cougars (5-11, 1-2 WCC), defeating their Court 1 opponent 8-4.

Playing at the No. 4 singles position, Price made quick of Jessica Agra, 6-1, 6-4, to put BYU on the board. Santa Clara answered with two wins. Paul fell 6-4, 6-4 on Court 5 before Brittany Warly defeated freshman Lisa Waldron, 6-4, 6-3.
