Cougars Gain Second Win in Hawai'i

HONOLULU -- Success continued to roll for the No. 73 BYU women’s tennis team as it rose above Hawai’i after a grueling 4-3 battle Saturday.

After losing the doubles point, the Cougars (2-1) came in strong during singles play to take the match.

Cougar duo Aubrey Paul and Andie Young, the only sophomores for BYU, defeated Algae Van den Bergh and Natasha Zorec for the team’s one doubles win (8-3). No. 53 Callie Craig and Megan Price fell to Barbara Pinterova and Katarina Poljakova 8-5, while Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova dropped their match to Alyssa Nafarrete and Magdalena Ploch 8-2.

Paul and Ezhova remain undefeated in singles, each with three wins. Paul defeated Van den Bergh in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Ezhova lost her first set 2-6, but came back for the win by taking the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.

Newcomer Desiree Tran recorded her first win for the Cougars with a quick victory against Zorec (6-0, 6-3). Elle Carney also finished strong with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win against Ploch.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-2) received their last two points from Poljakova’s win against Craig and Pinterova’s win against Price.

Next up, the Cougars play at home against Washington State Friday at 11 a.m. and against Boise State Saturday at noon. Admission is free and spectators may park in the “Y Lot” parking lots to the southwest and northwest of the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts after 4 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday.

Netters Hit Hawai'i For Doubleheader

PROVO -- After a tough weekend at home, the No. 73 BYU women’s tennis team is ready to bounce back with a weekend doubleheader in Honolulu.

Thursday, the Cougars (0-1) will face future West Coast Conference opponent the University of San Francisco (1-0) at 2 p.m. MT. USF swept its home opener against Cal. State Bakerfield.

To finish off the competition, Cougars will face host Hawai’i (0-1) Saturday at 5 p.m. MT. Hawai’i lost its first match of the season 1-6 to No. 7 Duke.

In last Saturday’s match, BYU’s Elizaveta Ezhova went undefeated, with a win against No. 23 Washington’s Lina Xu in singles (6-3, 6-3) and an 8-5 doubles win with Elle Carney against Andjela Nemcevic and Samantha Smith.

Freshman Callie Craig leads the Cougars in singles, with an 11-5 record, followed by team captain Megan Price with a 10-6 record. In doubles, Craig and Price team up to dominate with an 11-3 record.

The Cougars’ will be home next weekend with another doubleheader, playing Washington State Friday and Boise State Saturday.
