Women's Tennis competes in Blue vs. White Scrimmage

PROVO, Utah – BYU women's tennis kicked off its 2023 season with a Blue vs. White scrimmage on Saturday, Jan. 21 on the Indoor Tennis Courts with team blue defeating team white. 

RESULTS

Doubles

  • Jiao/Smith(team blue) def. Moore/Pope 6-1
  • Astle and Huang (team blue) def. Dunyon and Wheatley 6-3

Jiao and Smith started the match off strong for team blue taking a 4-0 lead. Moore and Pope for team white then secured their first win as they cut their deficit to 4-1. Jiao and Smith went on two win two-straight games securing the match victory at 6-1. 

Astle and Huang's doubles match against Dunyon and Wheatley was a back and forth battle. Team blue (Astle and Huang) led team white (Dunyon and Wheatley) 4-3. Astle and Huang quickly picked up where they left off from the fall season defeating Dunyon and Wheatley 6-3 securing the match victory. 

Singles

  • Kara Wheatley (team white) def. Madison Smith 6-0, 6-1
  • Emilee Astle (team blue) def. Emmie Moore 6-2, 6-3
  • Bobo Huang (team blue) def. Jacque Dunyon 7-6 6-3, 6-3
  • Helen Jiao (team blue) def. Avery Pope 6-1, 6-1

Wheatley cruised to a 6-0 win over Smith in the first set. Wheatley continued to control the match leading 2-0 in the second set but Smith was able to win her first game cutting her deficit to just 2-1. Wheatley held her lead in the second set and won 6-1 clinching the singles victory. 

Huang led early against Dunyon 4-, eventually leading 5-2. Dunyon fought back cutting her deficit to 5-3. Huang hung on and won the first set 6-3. The two began the second set back and forth as they both won a game apiece and were tied at 1-1. Two-straight victories from Dunyon gave her a 3-1 lead in the set. Huang fought back claiming a 5-3 advantage and eventually won the set 6-3 clinching the match victory. 

Astle led Moore early at 4-1, eventually winning the first set 6-2. Moore continued to fight and took an early 2-1 lead in the second set. Astle eventually took the lead back at 4-2. Moore stayed in it, cutting her deficit to 4-3 but the senior captain, Astle, finished the set strong winning 6-3 and clinching the match victory. 

Jiao and Pope began their match tied at one game apiece. Jiao won three-straight games giving her a 4-1 advantage. Two more wins for Jiao clinched her the set victory at 6-1. Jiao quickly went up 2-0 in the second set after earning a break on a Pope serve. Pope won her first game in the second set after being tied at deuce, cutting her deficit to 2-1. Jiao went on to win the next two games extending her lead to 4-1. Two more wins for Jiao gave her the 6-1 set victory ultimately clinching the match. 

The Cougars will officially begin their season next week on Friday, Jan. 27 at Weber State. The match will begin at 12:00 p.m. MST.

BYU WOMENS TENNIS TO HOST BLUE-WHITE SCRIMMAGE ON SATURDAY

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis will kick off its 2023 season with a Blue vs. White scrimmage on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. MDT at the indoor tennis courts. 

The Cougars will look to have a successful season heading into the final year of competition in the West Coast Conference. 

BYU welcomes two freshmen this season: Tina Li and Emmie Moore. Captains Emilee Astle and Bobo Huang will lead the charge this season. 

The scrimmage will be non-ticketed and open seating. The Cougars open the regular season at Weber State on Friday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. MDT.
