BYU women's tennis wins big in home opener over Dixie State

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis opened its 2022 home schedule by sweeping Dixie State 7-0 on Saturday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

The Cougars started the morning out strong, sweeping the doubles 3-0 to earn their first point of the match. Senior Leah Heimuli and junior Helen Jiao swept their match 6-0 against Juliana Honczaruk and Rachel Mellor in the No. 1 spot. Freshmen Jacque Dunyon and Madison Smith won their first doubles match as a pair, defeating Sabrina Longson and Alysha Damron 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. BYU finished its sweep as junior Emilee Astle and sophomore Kara Lin ended their match with a 6-1 victory over Alexandra Hildreth and Ya-Chi Hsu.

BYU kept its momentum going into the singles matches. Freshman Bobo Huang defeated Hildreth in the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-1, securing the Cougars’ second point of the match. Jiao followed quickly after, sweeping Angelina Amelkina 6-0, 6-0, earning her second win of the day, along with sweeping every set she played. Dunyon added another point to the BYU stat line as she came out on top 6-2, 6-0 in her match against Hsu. Astle hammered the final nail in to secure the fourth point for the Cougar win, as she defeated Honczaruk 6-3, 6-0. Smith came out victorious after a hard-fought second set, beating Longson 6-0, 6-4. Lin finished off the day with the final win in the BYU sweep, defeating Damron 7-5, 6-0.

BYU will be competing in a doubleheader against Weber State and Fresno State next Saturday. The Cougars will take on the Wildcats at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts at 8 a.m. MST and the Bulldogs at the SunPro Tennis Club in Springville, Utah at 1 p.m. MST.

  2. Astle/Lin vs Hildreth/Hsu: 6-1
  3. Dunyon/Smith vs Longson/Damron: 6-1

Order of finish: 1,3,2

SINGLES:

  1. Huang vs Hildreth: 6-0, 6-1
  2. Dunyon vs Hsu: 6-2, 6-0
  3. Jiao vs Amelkina: 6-0, 6-0
  4. Astle vs Honczaruk: 6-3, 6-0
  5. Smith vs Longson: 6-0, 6-4
  6. Lin vs Damron: 7-5, 6-0

BYU women's tennis host doubleheader for home opener

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis (1-5) looks to shake their recent losses as they host their home opener in a doubleheader as they welcome Boise State (0-0) and Dixie State (0-4) on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

 

Boise State has yet to play a dual match this season, competing in the ISU Fall Invite, WSU Cougar Classic, Barb Chandler Classic, and ITA Regional Championships in the fall and the Long Beach State Invite last weekend. The Broncos will compete against the Dixie State Trailblazers in Provo on Friday, Feb. 4, before playing BYU Saturday.

 

Boise State finished the 2020-2021 season 12-6 with a 5-2 loss to BYU. The Cougars lead with a 15-3 all-time record over the Broncos. 

 

Dixie State looks to come back to BYU for the second time ever after falling 7-0 in both matches in its doubleheader to the Cougars. Dixie State finished the 2020-2021 season 5-15. The Trailblazers are on a four-match losing streak after competing against Utah (doubleheader), Idaho State and Weber State, winning one doubles point against the Wildcats. 

 

BYU will host Boise State at 10 AM MST and Dixie State at 4 PM MST.
