Five Goals, Five Girls for No. 22 BYU

PROVO -- The No. 22-ranked BYU Cougars took on past Cougars in their Saturday match-up and came away with a 5-1 victory, getting all five goals from different players.

"We wanted to treat tonight's game just like any other game and we're very fortunate that we have such great alumni to come back and give us a competitive match-up," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We prepared for this game like it was any other opponent and were able to see a lot of great things tonight, a lot of people really stepped up."

BYU's first goal came in the 12th minute from sophomore Jessica Ringwood with its second goal coming just three minutes later from junior Lauren Anderson. The Cougars played a competitive offense that gave them numerous goal opportunities and saw 24 shot attempts.

Junior McKinzie Olson played goalie in the first half for the alumni. With her own teammates taking shots against her, she made 10 saves in the half.

The alumni took their chance to get on the scoreboard when a foul was called in the box against BYU, giving alumni-player Katie Larkin the opportunity to put the ball in the net and inch closer to BYU's lead.

Joining Larkin on the alumni squad were other top performers such as Carolyn Swenson, Jennie Christianson-Smith, Karen Cook, Jamie Beck, Alyssa Vander Veur, Amanda Draeger-Peterson, Whitney Feller, Ashleigh Jameson, Charlene Lui and Haylee Cuthbert.

Goals three and four also came in the first half for the Cougars when Lindsi Lisonbee headed in the ball off a corner kick from Auna Janis-Doria in the 29th minute and Carlee Payne tapped the ball in off a pass from Jennie Marshall in the 33rd minute.

"We saw a lot of good offense and Jennie Marshall was fantastic tonight," Rockwood said. "I really think our forwards are going to be very hard to track this season. I was very pleased with our effort tonight."

Marshall dominated the offensive stretch in the second half, taking five shots and getting a goal herself in the 75th minute.

"I think we're picking up right where we left off from last season," Rockwood said. "The girls had a great off season to prepare and spent a lot of time playing soccer. They were here most of the month of July in camps and training extremely hard. I think we have a great unity between us and I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."

The Cougars will now head to California for their first two games of the season against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Monday. They return to Provo for their first home game on August 27 against Weber State at 7 p.m.
