LONG BEACH -- Senior forward Kassidy Shumway scored the first goal of the season for the No. 14 BYU Cougars en route to a 2-0 shutout victory over Long Beach State, Friday.
Shumway's header goal came just two minutes into the the second half off a cross from teammate Stacy Bartholomew. Shumway tallied two shots and one assist against the 49ers.
Sophomore forward Carlee Payne brought home the win for the Cougars with a one-on-one breakaway against the goalie to the net after a pass from Shumway. Payne tallied three shots in the victory.
Jennie Marshall led the offense for BYU with five shots, a game-high.
Karina Camacho led the 49ers with three shots in the game.
The first half of play was controlled mostly by BYU but the 49ers held off any scoring until the second half. BYU finished with 13 shots to Long Beach State's seven.
Junior goalkeeper McKinzie Olson recorded her 22nd shutout of her career in the victory.

PROVO -- Ready to start their season, the No. 14-ranked BYU Cougars will head to California to play Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton this coming Friday and Monday.
The Cougars are just coming off a 5-1 victory against the BYU alumni in their exhibition game. All five goals for BYU were scored by five different players, showcasing BYU's versatility and skill this year. The Cougars are returning eight starters for the 2010 season.
BYU last played Long Beach State in 2008 that ended in a 2-1 BYU victory. The 49ers lost their exhibition game 1-2 earlier this week to the San Diego State Aztecs
The last meeting between Cal State Fullerton and BYU was in 1999 when the Cougars won 3-0. The titans were picked to finish seventh in the Big West's preseason poll and are returning 10 starters.
