Provo, Utah (Nov. 25, 2000) A win over a strong Pac-10 team is a great way to open up your season at home, and that's exactly what head coach Trent Shippen got Saturday, a 68-53 win over UCLA.
Freshman Heather Cheesman led the BYU effort with 16 points and six rebounds followed by Caroline Beus who also scored in double digits with 13 points and a team high nine rebounds. The first home win this season brings the Cougars record to 1-1. UCLA falls to 0-4.
"This is a nice win for us. We still have to get better in a lot of little things, but overall I'm pleased with our players and their ability to stay with our game plan," said head coach Trent Shippen. He credited the BYU defensive effort as a huge difference in the game. "We played very well defensively and made it tough for them to get back into the game. We got the lead and kept it."
The Cougars had a slim five-point 33-28 advantage at half time, but were able to extend the lead to as much as 15 points early on in the second half and up to 19 points twice. BYU's strong defensive effort held off the Bruins to just nine points in a six-minute span midway through the second period.
UCLA's Michelle Greco led all scores with 24 points and eight rebounds. The Bruins shot 33 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free-throw line. BYU shot 47 percent from the field and 55 percent at the line.
The Cougars finish off the month of November on the road with a game at Southern Utah on the 28th and at Washington State on the 30th.

The Bruins come to the Marriott Center with a 0-3 loss to date. They've lost to Duke and two MWC opponents (New Mexico and Utah). Michelle Greco leads UCLA averaging 16.7 ppg and 2.7 rpg. Natalie Jarrett tops the list in rebounds with an average of 6.3 per game. The Bruins are also averaging 49.3 points per game and shooting .305 from the field. Kaly Gillette Shippen (#04) is coach Shippen's sister-in-law. She married his younger brother Ty Shippen who walked on to this year's men's basketball team.

Thorn Headlines Pre-Season All-Conference Team
Sophomore guard, Erin Thorn from Orem, Utah was named to the preseason All-Conference Team by the media and coaches. Teammate Julie Whetten was voted as the preseason Top Newcomer by the media.
Head Coach Trent Shippen
Trent Shippen enters his fourth season at the helm of BYU's women's basketball program. The 22 wins this year are a first for the Cougar program since the 1992-93 season when BYU finished with a 24-5, 13-1 record and made its last NCAA Championships appearance.
This is Shippen's first Division I coaching assignment. Shippen came to BYU after a three year stint as head coach at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. While at Ricks, he led his 1995 team to a fifth place finish in the NJCAA Tournament, and was voted Region 18 Coach of the Year. He was also the recipient of the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award at the 1995 NJCAA Tournament. He played college hoops at Ricks College and at Colorado State University. At Ricks he earned All-Region 18 honors as a sophomore and was a member of the 1983-84 Viking team that placed sixth at the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
During his career at CSU he helped the Rams place third in the NIT Tournament in 1988, where Shippen set the Madison Square Garden single-game record with six three-pointers. The following year he helped CSU win the league title, advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament, was selected Academic All-WAC, and averaged 7.6 points and 2.9 assists.

(On the Cougars) I liked the way we played against Arizona last week. We played them competitively and had a chance to win. We have to continue working hard especially on the little things. I like how we are doing and we're anxious to have Jennifer Lietner back in our lineup, she will help us a lot especially on our inside play. (On UCLA) They have played more games than we have up to this point. They have a great player in Michelle Greco and they'll create a lot of opportunities for her to shoot the ball so we need to take care of her as much as possible.
