Cougars Battled During Utah Relays

SALT LAKE CITY – BYU headed to the University of Utah to take on the Utes in exhibition relays Friday night.

“The team did a great job,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Our team competed better than it has in the past and it was fitting that we won all of the combined events. We are off to a great start.”

As a non-scoring meet, both teams were able to race without the normal pressure of scored events. This opening meet gives the two teams an indication as to how their respective teams are going into the regular season.

The Cougars came away with three wins for the night in all of the combined men and women’s events. BYU took wins in the 200-yard mixed medley relay (1:36.63), the 200-yard mixed freestyle relay (1:27.95) and the 200-yard mixed diver relay (1:51.57). The two universities will have another chance to compete head-to-head later on in the regular season.

BYU will next travel to Colorado for the Intermountain Shootout Invitational on Oct. 4-5. The first day of the meet will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. MDT and will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m. MDT.

Cougars Face Utes in Relays

PROVO, Utah – The BYU swim and dive teams will officially kick off the season in Salt Lake City on Friday, Sept. 20, to compete in the Utah/BYU Relays at 5 p.m. MDT at Ute Natatorium.

“This is an exciting meet because it’s fun for both teams,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “I’m looking forward to some great relays from both the swimmers and divers.”

This meet is not scored but gives the athletes a chance to showcase their abilities without pressure. There will be several different types of relays, including freestyle and co-ed. The divers will even show the fans their skills off the board and in the lanes for a relay of their own.

The Cougars will meet the Utes again later in the season to face each other in a scored matchup. The divers will compete first on Jan. 31 while the swimmers will compete on Feb. 1. Both meets will be held in Provo at the Richards Building Pool.
