LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The No. 24 ranked BYU men's golf team is in second place after the first day of play at The Prestige at PGA West co-hosted by UC Davis and Stanford.

"It's exciting for this young team to be competing so well," head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "The depth of our team really helped us today."

BYU (No. 24) trails Texas Christian (No. 6), last year's Prestige champion, by two strokes going into the final 18 holes Tuesday. Pepperdine (No. 34), UCLA (No. 4) and Northwestern (No. 31) complete the top-5 spots.

Leading the Cougars were junior Todd Miller and freshman Jake Ellison who both shot three-under-par and are tied for third place with scores of 70-71--141 and 72-69--141 respectively.

Freshman Clay Ogden (71-74--145) is tied for 17th place, sophomore Clay Bingham (73-75--148) is tied for 33rd place and sophomore Oscar Alvarez (73-76--149) is tied for 39th place.

Individually, leading the Prestige is Stanford's Zack Miller (67-67--134) who is at 10-under-par. In second place is Texas Christian's Colby Beckstrom at five-under-par.

"If we stay patient and make a few putts, we have a good chance of winning the tournament tomorrow," Brockbank said.

BYU is playing on the par-72 La Quinta Resort Mountain Course, which measures 6, 841 yards.

The Cougars will continue play with the final 18 holes Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Results will be available at www.ucdavisaggies.com by approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday (PT).
