FRESNO, Calif. -- The BYU men's golf team shot a third-round score of 286, to finish in third place overall and 25-under-par at the 41st annual Fresno State Lexus Classic Saturday.

Colorado State captured the team title with a score of 281-271-279--831 (-33). San Diego claimed the second place spot at 285-272-277--834 (-30) and BYU finished in third place at 280-275-284--841 (-23).

"I was really pleased with the consistently of our team this weekend," head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "The tournament gave us a good idea of how good we can really be."

In his first tournament of the year, sophomore Clay Bingham tied for 16th place by going four-under-par and was the second best BYU finisher. Bingham's 16th place finish is the best of his college career (71-70-71--210).

The top finisher was sophomore Oscar Alvarez who carded 69-69-73--221 (-5) to tie for 10th place. Alvarez's first and second round scores of 69 tie his career low round record.

Juniors Greg Machtaler and Todd Miller finished tied for 19th and 21st respectively, at 71-74-68--213 (-3) and 71-69-74--214 (-2). Ron Harvey Jr. finished seven-over-par and freshman Jake Ellison was disqualified from the third round due to a scorecard issue.

Going into the final round Ellison was tied for sixth place 72-67--139 and with his third round score would have placed fifth and improved BYU's team finish to second place.

CSU's Nolan Martin won the tournament at 12-under-par with a score of 68 in all three rounds of play.

BYU will compete next on Oct. 20-21 at the Barona Collegiate Cup in San Diego, Calif.
