CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The BYU men’s golf team shot a third-round 285 (-3) Tuesday to finish the Lamkin San Diego Classic in eighth place.

“It wasn’t quite the tournament we were looking for,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We struggled with the Bermuda grass from the fairways and were not able to consistently get the ball close enough to the hole. Peter (Kuest) played another solid week and Carson (Lundell) played two great rounds, including a solid 67 to lead the team today.”

Kuest led the team with a third-round 71 (-1) and a final score of 213 (-3) to finish the tournament tied for fifth. The result marked Kuest’s seventh top-10 finish of the season. The senior tallied 11 birdies at the two-day event and carded an eagle in the third round on hole 17.

Lundell posted a team-best five birdies Tuesday and no bogeys to finish with a third-round 67 (-5) and a total score of 215 (-1). Lundell finished tied for 14th for his third top-15 finish of the season. Rhett Rasmussen followed, finishing four strokes behind Lundell after shooting a third-round 75 (+3) to tie for 34th place.

Brock Stanger and Kelton Hirsch wrapped up the scoring for the Cougars, tying for 80th and 86th places, respectively. Stanger posted a third-round 72 (E) and a final score of 228 (+12), while Hirsch carded a 79 (+7) Tuesday and a total of 230 (+14).

BYU ended the Lamkin Classic with a combined score of 867 (+3), finishing just 11 strokes behind tournament-winner Tennessee. Arizona State, San Diego State, Texas A&M and Cal rounded out the tournament's top-five, while WCC foe San Francisco placed sixth.

Additional WCC opponents Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara finished tied for 10th and in 12th, respectively, while San Diego took 13th and LMU placed 18th.

Dunaway ties for first at Coronado Individual
Competing in the Coronado Individual, Spencer Dunaway tied for first place with a third-round 71 (-1) Tuesday and a three-round total of 212 (-4). Cole Ponich also participated in the individual event held about 12 miles northwest of the Lamkin Classic and tied for 15th with a total score of 220 (+4).
