Cougars play UVU in final home match

PROVO, Utah—The No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball team finishes off its season with a non-conference home match against Utah Valley University Tuesday at 7 p.m. MST.

The match will be broadcast on BYUtv. Live streaming is available on byutvsports.com.

BYU (25-3, 13-3 WCC) secured a share of the West Coast Conference title Thursday after defeating Pepperdine 3-1 in Malibu, Calif. BYU lost a close 3-2 match to San Diego Saturday, giving the Toreros the win they needed to tie for conference champions.

Jennifer Hamson tallied 23 kills against both teams, also recording a double-double against San Diego with 15 digs. Hamson averages 4.01 kills per set and is No. 22 in Division I volleyball for points per set with 4.96.

Nicole Warner also had a double-double against San Diego with 10 kills and 12 blocks. Warner averages 1.76 blocks per set, good for No. 1 in the NCAA. Setter Heather Hannemann’s double-double against the Toreros included 55 assists and 15 digs, averaging 11.29 assists per set which is good for No. 25 in NCAA stats.

Libero Tia Withers set a new career high of 30 digs against San Diego. She averages 3.16.

BYU leads the series with UVU 9-0. The teams last played in 2010, when BYU won 3-0.

UVU (18-8, 7-1 GWC) comes off a sweep of the Great West Conference tournament after tying for first during regular conference play.

Erica Nish leads the Wolverines with 2.51 kills per set. Brookelyn Hall averages 9.49 assists for UVU and Patti Hatch averages 2.64 digs per set.

The Cougars await Selection Sunday to learn their opponents for the NCAA Tournament. BYU received the WCC’s automatic bid to the tournament after winning the tiebreaker. BYU and San Diego both lost to Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara and each other, so the conference looked at how many sets were won in the series against each other. BYU won 5-4.
