Hamson named first WCC Player of the Week

PROVO, Utah--Junior opposite hitter Jennifer Hamson received the first West Coast Conference Player of the Week award of the 2012 season on Monday.

Hamson led the Cougars to a 3-0 sweep of the Rice Invitational over the weekend, contributing 49.5 of the team's points. The 6-foot-7 junior had 44 kills and 10 blocks, hitting .528 during the tournament. Hamson earned the tournament MVP award for her efforts.

Hamson led the tournament in points per set (5.50), kills per set (4.89) and hitting percentage (.528). She set a season high of 18 kills against Rice and had a new career-high hitting percentage of .765 against Air Force. Hamson had three double-figure outings over the weekend, with 13 kills against Arkansas State, 13 against Air Force and 18 against Rice.

With Hamson's help, the Cougars didn't lose a single set during their first three matches of the season. The team led the tournament in hitting percentage (.402), assists (15.44 per set), kills (15.89 per set) and service aces (1 per set).

Up next for Hamson and the Cougars is the Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. BYU will play against host Wichita State, No. 25 Colorado State and No. 15 Tennessee.
