PROVO, Utah—The BYU women’s volleyball team started spring practice Thursday in preparation for four off-season events and a foreign tour this summer.

With only three seniors lost from the 2011 season, the Cougars (21-9 overall, 10-6 WCC in 2011) look forward to building on the success they found in their WCC debut.

“We have good numbers,” Shawn Olmstead said. “We like who we have in the gym. We’re excited for what we’re building towards. We’re trying to better what we had last year and fine-tune other things.”

The team kicks off spring competition with a match at Utah Valley University on March 9 at 2 p.m. Last year the Wolverines finished regular season Great West Conference champions. The team was on its way to capturing the conference tournament as well, but fell in the GWC tournament final to North Dakota. UVU ended the season 23-9 (9-1 GWC), an all-time school best.

BYU follows up with a home match against rival Utah March 23 at 3 p.m. The Cougars then head to Salt Lake City for a tournament at Utah March 31, which begins at 9 a.m. The Utes finished their season ninth in the Pac-12 with an 11-22 overall record and 6-16 conference record.

For the Cougars’ final spring matchup they face UVU once more, this time on Elaine Michaelis Court April 6 at 2 p.m.

To cap off the spring season, BYU will head to South America for matchups in Brazil and Argentina.
