Vaughn Leads BYU to Sweep of Idaho

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Behind a career-high 14 kills from freshman Katie Vaughn, BYU women’s volleyball swept (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) Idaho in the opener of the Varney’s Invitational at Kansas State Friday morning. The Cougars have now won back-to-back matches and are 3-2 on the season.

In addition to Vaughn’s 14 kills, Heather Hannemann distributed 26 assists and had eight digs. Three Cougars totaled double-digit dig totals, led by Christie Carpenter and Kendalyn Hartsock with 12 apiece and a career-high 10 from Tia Withers.

Nicole Warner added a match-high six blocks and Jennifer Hamson was second on the team with eight kills. As a team, BYU hit .225 and had 10.0 blocks. The Cougars limited Idaho to .027 hitting.

BYU opened the first set 4-0 behind the serving of Hannemann and a kill from Carpenter. Idaho cut into the lead at 7-5 but a kill by Hamson ignited a 5-0 run that included two kills from Vaughn. The Cougars led by at least five points the rest of set one and won 25-16 on an Idaho service error.

The Vandals took control early in set two, going on a 4-0 run to lead 7-3. Hamson ended the run with a kill and two kills by Vaughn tied the score at 7-all. Another Hamson kill gave BYU a 13-12 lead and started a 6-0 run that put the Cougars in the driver’s seat. Vaughn had kills on two of BYU’s last three points to clinch the set at 25-17.

In game three, Carpenter registered a kill to give the Cougars a 5-4 advantage and back-to-back blocks extended the lead to 7-4. BYU held a comfortable lead the rest of the set before Idaho went on a 3-0 run to get within two at 23-21. The Cougars were quick to respond as Hamson and Carpenter recorded kills to end the set at 25-21 and complete the sweep.

BYU will be back in action at the Varney’s Invitational at 5 p.m. CT against Georgia Southern.
