Rainbow Wahine Sweep Cougars Again
HONOLULU, Hawai’i (Sept. 18, 2010) – After the second-straight match against No. 6 Hawai’i (10-1), the BYU women’s volleyball team (3-9) was swept again Saturday night (23-25, 13-25, 16-25) at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of almost 7,000 fans.
“We played better tonight than we did last night, but it was still disappointing,” BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. “We were not able to run the offense we wanted to run. Our serve-receive broke down and limited our offense.”
Freshman rightside hitter Jennifer Hamson led the Cougars on the attack with eight kills while sophomore middle blocker Nicole Warner added seven kills. Senior setter Kiana Rogers tallied 24 assists while three Cougars, Rogers, Christie Carpenter and Kendalyn Hartsock, each had double-digit digs with 10 apiece.
The Cougars were able to out-block the Rainbow Wahine 10.0 to 7.0 with senior Christina Measom and Warner each adding four.
In the same fashion as the night before, the Cougars started the match strong, highly contending for the first set. Hamson hit at .455 with six kills while Carpenter had six digs in the first set alone. BYU knotted the score six times early in the first, and after three-straight Hawai’i errors, the Cougars were up 13-10.
Maintaining the lead until 19-all, the teams again battled for possession. After tying the score at 23, the Warriors tallied two-straight points to win set one, 25-23.
The Cougars struggled in the next two sets, never coming up with the lead and fell in straight sets 25-13, 25-16. Hawai’i had three Warriors in double-digit kills with Brittany Hewitt, Kanani Danielson and Chanteal Satele leading the way.
BYU will return to the mainland to begin Mountain West Conference play against No. 16 Colorado State on Friday Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. MT in the Smith Fieldhouse.
