Cougars End MWC Season with Win
SAN DIEGO -- In the last Mountain West Conference match of the season, the BYU women’s volleyball team (15-13, 9-7 MWC) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (14-14, 7-9 MWC) 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23).
“It’s nice to finish the conference season with a win,” BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. “SDSU is a great team and they battled hard.”
Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker led the Cougars with 11 kills on the afternoon; also adding nine digs and two solo blocks. Freshman Nicole Warner tallied nine kills at .333 hitting percentage while Junior Christina Measom chalked up eight kills at .353 percent. Junior setter Kiana Rogers had 39 assists while senior libero Morgan Lloyd Sorensen held up the back row with 17 digs.
After back-and-forth play in the beginning of the first set, the Cougars pulled away with a 4-0 run ending at 7-4. The Aztecs later tallied a 5-0 run to take over the lead at 13-11 with five-straight kills. The Cougars battled back with a 6-1 run to once again gain the lead at 17-14. SDSU followed that run with three-straight points to knot the score at 17. A battle to the end of the set, the Cougars came out with the win at 25-23.
Warner led the Cougars in set one with four kills while Measom tallied three, hitting at .750 with no errors. Morgan Lloyd Sorensen led the back row with three digs in the first set.
Set two was in favor of the Aztecs, as they began with a 10-3 run. The Cougars were unable to catch up, falling to SDSU 25-13. Walker led the Cougars with three kills in the second set while Measom and Warner backed her up with two kills apiece.
“Our serving and passing completely broke down in the second game and we weren’t able to bounce back,” said Goulding.
With 15 ties in set three, the Cougars posted a 3-0 run to finish off the set with another win to lead the match 2-1. Walker had four kills and one solo block to lead BYU in the third set. Phillips tallied three kills while Carpenter, Sorensen and Rogers all tallied service aces.
Both teams battled it out in the fourth set until BYU chalked up a 9-1 run ending at 19-12. After Measom posted back-to-back-to-back kills at points 21, 22 and 23 and a solo block by Walker to bring the set to match point at 24-17, the Aztecs tallied a 6-0 run to scare the Cougars. Warner put the match away with a kill to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
The Cougars will conclude their season by traveling to St. Mary’s college in Moraga, Calif. Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. PT.
