COLORADO SPRINGS -- The BYU women’s volleyball team (14-13, 8-7 MWC) swept the Air Force Falcons (8-20, 0-15) in three, (25-11, 26-24, 25-16) Thursday night in the second-to-last game of the Mountain West Conference season.

“I was pleased with tonight’s overall performance, everyone participated in the win,” BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. “Heather Hannemann had the opportunity to set for us and did a great job. The middles, Nicole, Marisa and Christina definitely contributed the most to the win.”

The kills were evenly dispersed among all players with senior Kayla Walker leading the pack with 10 kills. Christina Measom posted eight kills at .583 while freshman Nicole Warner hit at .545 percent with six kills. Senior Marisa Boaz had three kills on four attempts and no errors and Hannemann had 22 assists in two sets.

After tying the first two points, the Cougars got off to a good start in the first set posting 12-1 run where the Falcons couldn’t catch up. Walker led the team with four kills while Measom added three; Rogers tallied two service aces and Warner posted two blocks.

Set two proved to be a bit more challenging with 15 ties and seven different lead changes. BYU came out with the win in a fight to the end. Air Force with the lead at 24-23, Phillips tallied a kill to keep the game going, followed by a block by her and Warner and a kill by Carpenter to finish off the set, 26-24.

Warner led set two with four kills while freshman setter Heather Hannemann came into the match to add two kills and a service ace. Senior Stephanie Lau had three kills while Walker, Measom and Carpenter each added two kills apiece.

Set three was won by Measom chalking up the first kill and never losing the lead; Measom and Walker finished the set with three kills each while Boaz had two kills and one block.

“We are looking forward to San Diego, it will be a good final test for our team,” said Goulding.

The Cougars will next travel to San Diego State for the last MWC match of the season Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
