PROVO -- In front of 1,590 fans for senior night, the BYU women’s volleyball team (13-13, 8-6 MWC) fell in five to the No. 1 Mountain West Conference ranked Colorado State Rams (21-5, 13-2 MWC) (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-27, 12-15).

“We out-played them but had just enough lulls to lose the match,” BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. “We were very aggressive on the serve and had nine service aces, something we have been working on. Colorado State is a great team and they pushed us to our limits.”

Camilla Phillips led the Cougars with a career-high 14 kills, also posting a .500 hitting percentage. Christina Measom was right behind her, also hitting .500 and tallying 13 kills. Setter Kiana Rogers chalked up 49 assists and 12 digs, her ninth double-double of the season. Melissa Lake Wright led the back row in digs with 17 while three other Cougars had double digit digs on the night. Christie Carpenter added 13 digs and seven kills while libero Morgan Lloyd Sorensen tallied 14 kills.

The beginning of the match stared with both teams trading points until the Cougars went on an 11-3 run to put them up 14-6. With Melissa Lake Wright serving, Measom posted three-straight kills, causing a Ram timeout during the 11-3 run. Although the Cougars had a 14-6 lead, CSU bounced back with an 11-2 run of its own to take the lead at 17-16.

BYU knotted the score at 17 and 18, next going on a 4-0 run to keep the lead for the rest of the set. The Cougars started the match taking set one 25-21. Measom led the Cougars on the attack in the first set with four kills, hitting at .800, Carpenter and Phillips both tallied .500 hitting percentages with three and two kills, respectively.

The Rams came out strong in the second with an 8-2 start, causing BYU to take a timeout. Coming out of the break, Nicole Warner posted back-to-back kills, along with one kill apiece from Carpenter and Phillips to give cut the Ram lead to three at 9-6.

The Cougars gently chipped away at the score, eventually posting a 5-0 run with Carpenter back to serve. Measom and Rogers had back-to-back blocks to score the 11th and 12th points of the set, ending the run at 13-15. The Cougars got the sideout right back to knot the score at 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22, but coming up short, Colorado State taking the second 25-23.

In the second, three players had three kills with Measom continuing to lead hitting at .667 for the match, as well as Carpenter and Phillips (.625 cum).

Coming out of the break Phillips pounded one down to begin set three. Both teams traded points until Rogers stepped up to the serving line, knocking down three service aces. During that 9-0 serving stint, Phillips posted a kill along with multiple CSU hitting errors and violations to give the Cougars a 12-4 lead.

CSU gradually chipped away at the score, but was unable to catch up with the Cougar lead, Measom pounding down the last point at 25-20.

Set four proved to be the toughest set for both teams. With 10 ties and seven lead changes, the Rams came out on top, both teams battling to the end, 27-25.

After both teams had two sets apiece, the Rams came out with a 5-1 run. The Cougars scored points two and three off of a block from Warner and Walker and a solo block by Warner. Phillips scored points four and five and Measom tallied the last kill of a 4-0 run, tying the score at eight. The score was knotted again at nine and 10, but after a 3-0 Ram run, the Cougars couldn’t retaliate. Walker and Measom came out with the last Cougar points, but outside hitter Jacque Davisson slammed down the last two points for the 15-12 win.

The Cougars are next on the road to finish off the MWC season facing Air Force on Thursday at 7 p.m. and San Diego State Saturday at 7 p.m.
