LARAMIE -- With back-to-back road games, the BYU women’s volleyball team (9-9, 5-3) ended the week with a five-game win over Wyoming (10-12, 1-7) 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11.

“It was a much better team effort tonight,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “I changed things around and it really helped our attack, especially in the middle. Wyoming played a great volleyball game tonight and dug us well.”

The Cougars had three spikers in double-digits with Christie Carpenter leading the way with a career-high 21, Christina Measom with 13, hitting .310 and Nicole Warner with 12 (career-high tied), hitting .370. On the defensive side of the ball Morgan Lloyd Sorensen led the team with 18 digs, accompanied by Melissa Lake Wright with 12 and Carpenter, Chelsea Goodsell and Kiana Rogers all tallying eight digs each.

“Christie keeps getting better and better,” said Goulding. “Morgan also played well, holding up our back row and serving aggressively.”

Wyoming started out the night on the run with three-straight unanswered points. BYU answered back with a 3-1 run to precede back-and-forth play for the two teams. Two-straight points from BYU off of a kill by Camilla Phillips and a service ace from Christie Carpenter, the Cougars knotted the score at six. After trading one point each, the Cowgirls picked up a three-point lead at 12-9.

The Cougars weren’t finished with the set, posting a 5-0 run with kills by Measom and Warner and three Wyoming attack errors, taking the lead at 14-12. At 16-14 Wyoming hit its groove with a 5-0 run ending at 19-16. BYU struggled to come back with the lead, falling in the first set 25-23.

Although set two started out in the same fashion as set one with the Cowgirls posting a 3-0 lead to begin, the Cougars gained the lead at 7-6 and kept it the rest of the set, putting it away 25-21.

For the third set in a row, Wyoming started on a 3-0 run, the Cougars trailing until knotting the score at 12 due to kills by Measom and Warner. A 6-0 Cougar run put the Cougars up at 15-12. The Cowgirls fought back, later posting a 6-0 run ending at 20-18 to take the lead and hold onto it until finishing off the set 25-22.

BYU turned the tables in set four with a 4-0 start sparked by a service ace by Morgan Lloyd Sorensen. Later, another service ace by Kiana Rogers gave the Cougars their largest lead of the match thus far with six at 8-2. They tallied four more six-point leads until pulling away at 17-10 with a seven-point lead off of a Carpenter kill.

A block by Phillips and Warner gave BYU an 18-10 lead before the Cowgirls posted a 4-0 run. Carpenter got the sideout with a kill at 19-14, later trading points, causing Wyoming to call a timeout at 20-15 with a block from Phillips and Warner. Coming out of a BYU timeout at 22-18, the Cougars ended with a 3-0 run by kills from Measom, Carpenter and a block by Rogers and Measom, ending 25-18, sending the match to five.

The fifth set started out with the score being tied five times until the Cougars pulled away after 7-7. A kill by Measom gave the Cougars the lead at 8-7, followed by a Wyoming attack error, a block by Measom, a timeout by Wyoming and a kill by Carpenter to bring the score to 11-7. BYU maintained the lead to win the match at 15-11 in the fifth set.

The Cougars will be back at the Smith Fieldhouse Friday at 7 p.m. to face in-state rival Utah. The Cougars dropped one to the Utes in five on the Crimson Court on Sept. 25th an look to defeat the Utes for the Deseret Duel.
